Blues Indication at The Crimea Tavern‘s Prince of Wales Hospice Charity Festival Castleford 24/08/03

Adding some blues quality to this annual festival came the Dutch blues band, Blues Indication featuring four superb musicians from Rotterdam . Marco Diamantatos on the coolest guitar/vocals you ever heard and ably assisted by Cor Roosloot playing brilliant fills and solos on blues harp. The rhythm section of Erik Lipman on a classic ‘68 vintage Rickenbacker bass and the enigmatic Rick Bouts on drums completed the line up of a great, now international band.

Their set followed two rock bands but this was of no consequence as they eased into “Slow Down” in the key of C and followed by “Green Stuff”, showing their Peter Green influence.

More of the same influence came through with “Jumping at Shadows” with Marco playing a borrowed Les Paul Custom for the occasion and sounding wonderfully Green through a Marshall amp. Willie Dixon's “Watchout” was a welcome addition to the varied set which also included a very laid back and bluesey “Cold Turkey” the John Lennon composition. This unusual insertion was received with extended applause by the sun-kissed festival crowd.

The hot Sunday afternoon was spiced up with some of SRV's Texas blues, and this particular one, “Cold Shot” attracted many dancers to the front of the specially erected stage by the side of the river. Then returning to Peter Green's work, Blues Indication played the Fleetwood Mac classic “Oh Well” to great effect before a superb rendition of John Mayall's “ Congo Square ”. Would Willie Dixon be the composer of “Ying Yang”? What about “Can't Hold Out”? Both these numbers were very well presented by this excellent Dutch band as well as a really nice song “One Good Reason Why” a Dutch original composition. The band went off to great applause and paved the way for the brilliant Doncaster band, Smokestack Blues.

During this bank holiday weekend, Blues Indication played three other sets on the pub's stage. One was an acoustic set with just Cor Roosloot and Marco Diamantatos as a duo. I caught some of the set and I can report that this band are versatile blues artists with a huge repertoire. I also caught the Friday night full band where they played a different set to the Festival stage performance on the Sunday. I think we should be keeping our eyes open in the future for this Dutch blues band; they would go down a storm with pure blues fans at the UK 's major festivals.
